Feature Script to recognize features of imported models

Came across a post that mentioned featureworks (that takes me back to some early CAD days) which if you don't already know was an attempt to convert imported geometry into solidworks features.

It got me thinking, is it possible to create something through feature script to analyze an imported model and convert it to a model with a feature tree in Onshape?

Trust me I am very green when it comes to feature script so this might give the feature script experts here a good chuckle. Doesn't hurt to ask right?

Happy Friday everyone!

I would be impressed if the best AI researchers in the world could do this. It would be a more clear example of artificial general intelligence than anything that ChatGPT can do.

It’s hard enough for a good human engineer to reverse engineer an imported model and create a clean well done feature tree. Even the simplest brackets that are used for beginner CAD exercises can be modeled so many different ways. I’ve worked with, mentored and managed a lot of different people over the years and everyone has slightly different styles of parametric modeling.

In the other thread @NeilCooke mentioned that about all FeatureWorks could handle was plates with holes in them. I’d argue it can’t even do that well because it can’t capture design intent. You’ll get the equivalent of vomiting ordinate dimensions on everything, quite possibly not even from the 0,0 that you want. Every time I tried it, it was a bad joke.

Before there was direct editing functions and convert to sheet metal functions, I tried featureworks with sheet metal parts...... Needless to say I had to use the imported models for reference and remodel them to make the necessary edits...
