how to access variables created in different sketches or parts using dot notation or prefix symbols.

I have no idea how to access variables created in different sketches or parts using dot notation or prefix symbols.
When I create an instant var in/under the current sketch and try to use it in a different sketch, I found vars are not created with a global directive, even if I create the var in the root of the document.
So, help, it would be of utilitarian value to size all sketches in all parts within a document or across documents, ie...MS Office products.
So, it may be ignorance of the product's "onshape" features, the feature may be automatic when making connectors between parts, however, I am not there yet. I may be using the most archaic of the feature I am looking for, and find the solution at the end of studying how the feature should act.
Thanks again, I look forward to viewing your ports of the solution.
