Area of multiple enclosed regions of a sketch

Just learning Onshape and I'm wondering if I'm missing something here. I am going through the Top-Down Design Learning Pathway and am at the exercise where I'm asked to measure the total area of selected regions of a sketch. After selecting a single region, the bottom right displays the respective area, but when I select additional regions, the measurement type turns to parallel distance. Is this the intent of the interface or is there an option to select what to show? The behaviour does not seem to replicate what is shown in the exercise. Thanks in advance! And I'm looking forward to getting better at this.
