How are sketch edge directions decided?

In my FeatureScript, I create some sketch arcs and connect them together with 3D fit splines. To connect them correctly, I need to find out which end of the sketch arc receives the '0' parameter when evEdgeTangentLine() is called. Logically, this should be decided based on the start, middle, and end points given in the sketch arc function, but this doesn't seem to be the case. Is there any way to determine or control how edge directions are assigned?
