"Wrap" sketch around non cylindrical object

so I have this little button cap. it needs a cut added to it that needs to be the same depth over the entire surface (when measured from the surface face) which is very similar to how wrap works. 

I can't use wrap because that's only for cylinders. any other ideas?

Split face (or projection curve) is the way to go here. Yes, there will be some deformation of the arrow since it is a projection rather than a wrap, but it will be negligible.

For near spherical surfaces with large radius, like yours, a projection might just get close enough:

I will admit I don't quite understand what the split operation is doing but i was able to copy it and get exactly what i wanted!

The split operation just cuts the shapes projected out of the larger surface, so they can be accessed by tools like "Thicken". You will already see the projected shapes without splitting, but that'll be just a 3D curve, not a face, then.
