Variable input in linear pattern switches to number

At first I thought it was just my mistake, but I've had this happen about seven times. When I input the spacing on a linear pattern I write it as an equation (2*[a+b]). Works great, until I change the variables a bit down the line and the linear pattern has a number for the spacing rather than the function. I'm having trouble reproducing it precisely, but I can show a more precise example if needed.

I marked the sketch/folder where the error happens in the parts studio labeled Leg Molds. 

Same thing happened today. I think it happens when I open or close the document, but I'm not 100% sure.

The spacing is input as 2*(#Pla_min+#Sair). I definitely didn't input it as a number (no way I'd guess that correctly).

Does seem that once I go back and re-write it as a function again it doesn't change.
