Extruding sketches without extruding the sketch surface

Hey, Onshape is a great tool!
But there are two usability issues that drive me mad and I am full of faith that there is a solution to it.
1. I want to sketch something on a part surface. I select it and do my sketch with a closed set of lines to obtain an area ready to extrude. But then, the extrude feature insists to also extrude some of the features of the part's surface. And I cannot deselect it. Also these shadows of the part's surface are really distracting during the sketch phase. I really do not want to see any part data when I set the part invisible.
2. There are shortkeys for everything but not for deselecting. Do I really have to zoom out in order to see empty space and deselect by clicking into that nothingness? This is really driving my pulse up, a lot.
Please help me. I am sure I just can't see the solution to these issues.
Thanks!
