3D Model Simplification for Layouts

I'm doing manufacturing plant equipment layouts. OnShape is the tool I have, thus forget BIM, ACAD 2D etc. When I create an assembly from a couple of imported OEM machine models (4 pieces of equipement in this case), OnShape chokes, it either totally stalls or takes 10 minutes to complete one action i.e. zoom in.
Does anyone use a model simplification tool?

Have you checked with support? If you share your doc with them they can help verify there are no problems with your setup/network connection.
Are you laying the models out in a part studio or in an assembly? Instancing in an assembly can be made much faster than in a part studio (because a part studio needs to be able to model on those and have feature history, topological information, etc, whereas an assembly just needs a small amount of graphical data to do the same thing).
If you are working in a part studio and must continue to do so, @NeilCooke's model simplifier may help: https://forum.onshape.com/discussion/18394/new-custom-feature-simplify
FWIW When I was doing manufacturing layout, I would often just work in terms of bounding boxes to define keepout volumes. I suspect you've already thought of that but if not, it may be worthwhile trying.
