Relationship between identical parts in OnShape

diego_moreira373diego_moreira373 Member Posts: 4

Hello friends,

I recently started using the OnShape software. I really like the tool. However, I have a question.

In my project I have 5 identical parts. I would like to know what feature I can use within Part Studio so that when I change any of these copies, this change can be automatically applied to the other parts.

A long time ago I used Fusion 360 and there was this feature of creating copies and, when I changed one of the parts, all the others were automatically changed.

Does anyone know how I can apply this same feature within the Part Studio environment?

Thank you very much.

i think you are talking about patterns. If you change the seed of an pattern this change will affect all patterned parts.

Hi Rafael, thanks for your reply. I applied this suggestion of using a pattern, but I didn't get what I need. I applied the pattern to the piece, made the change to the first one and I didn't see the change being automatically applied to the second piece.

I guess it's better to just do one part in the part studio and then insert it 5 times in an assembly.
Part studios usually are not meant to copy the same parts.
Se also the training course "multi part studios"

I'm guessing you are not ordering the features properly… The pattern feature has to be below the features modifying the first part.

If that's the case I suggest you go through the introductory courses in the learning center…

I think transform with copy checked off selected might better serve your needs. worked a treat for me with a duplicate bracket I had created.

Share your document, as everyone is guessing what you are doing.

(my guess is you are using part studio to do assembly work).

Since the beginning of parametric modeling (proE) there has been an assembly & parts.

20 years ago they allowed multiple bodies in a part and this problem began, why use assemblies?

The main issue with parts in parts is instancing which doesn't occur in part studios. Why not? I don't know.

This one thing is true, you will begin in a part studio and finish in an assembly. Your design will have both a part studio & an assembly. This seems silly when you have a small project with a few parts. But for many projects, there's 1,000's of parts and 100's of sub assemblies. In reality, for larger projects, you're managing assemblies not parts.

You really have to learn assemblies. You can't short circuit the process and only know part studios. There is a lot of emphasis on part studios and how quickly you can build a concept, but you won't go into production with that.

Successful projects will always have great BOM's and BOM's are only generated from assemblies.
