Trying to use the shell feature.

I used revolve to create this very basic model. From my understanding revolve will only work with a fully shaded object, and not revolve around a construction line (I'm I mistaken?). I need the cone section hollow, so I figured I could sketch a circle and use the shell command to hollow it out to the specified dimensions. As usual in my Onshape infancy, I'm missing a parameter and can't figure it out with out some help from the bigger brains of the Onshape world.

@eben_alton - In this case I suspect the shell is failing because of the thin rim that's on the cone, The shell command considers the entire model, even the rim. Also in this case, maybe going back to the sketch and adjusting the profile might be an easier task.

You can also revolve a thin part these days.

OK thanks, That is good to know, I didn't realise shell would take the whole model into consideration. Originally I had sketched the model with the cone area hollowed out, hoping to be able to revolve it around a construction line as a central axis. But as far as I can tell revolve won't revolve around a construction line? Will it revolve around a point? Then I can select the top central point as the revolve axis.

OK I figured it out with your suggestions. I redid the sketch like the outline, revolved it. Then sketched a circle on the bottom and the shell command did its thing. Thanks for the help.

@eben_alton - You should be able to revolve geometry with a construction line, as an axis - make sure you have entered the right info in the right spaces. you might want to play around with this until you get the hang of it.

Even corner edges, cylindrical faces, or even conical faces of models can be used to define a revolve axis. Just make sure to highlight the "pick axis box" then click on the face or edge
