Not with the "standard content" unfortunately…
It might have been worth creating your own model for the bolt for this. You can't derive standard content either unfortunately, but you can use a "copy in place" from a context to quickly get the geometry (of the head), and then use "move face" to adjust the length.

You can derive standard content, they are just public documents. Finding the document is the hard part, requires a bit of effort to get the document URL.

I did copy in place. But I want to use a configuration variable to change the length of a single object, rather than inserting every single size in the assembly and then use configurations to Suppress the ones i don't want. can I use a config variable to create geometry of a certain length as-needed?
I meant "transform/copy in place" of the context entity within a part studio. As a way to create you own model without having to start from scratch.
that part is done, i just want to make it configurable with a variable instead of mating and suppressing dozens of instances
If you have your fastener in a part studio then you can just use a move face to adjust the length and control it with a config variable.
Edit, like this:

how do you make the configuration variable accessible by the studio? I made one, then go to the studio and type # and nothing shows up
They are independent (I just happened to name them the same)… Just create a config variable in the PS and one the assembly.
From the assembly you set the configuration of the part to use the assy variable:
deleted my response, it took me a long time to figure out how to do it, onshape help was unhelpful for this.
