Gurren Lagann Drill

A student and I are trying to model this object. I'm sure this is real easy, but we are struggling. We are unable to cut remove the semicircle on the helix path on the conic. We have been working on this for a couple hours now and we (I) am stuck at how to create the geometry ( semicircle ) to cut remove the spiral helix conic. Any help is greatly appreciated.

Sweep a full circle around a conical helix.
What Neil said. But I extended the helix to clean up the ends.

Thanks. Here is the full circle sweep around the helix. Still will not generate, What am I missing?
Intersecting geometry at the point of the cone…. This is cause by either:
1) sweep profile is to large for the helix
2) the helix is too tight for the sweep profile
Self-intersecting at the bottom. The error messages are actually helpful.
Which is why I split the helix slightly before it made it to the bottom.
