Gear keeps snapping into place (help!)

I'm currently animating a part of a robot that needs several things to happen. The long light grey pieces at the bottom act as linear actuators in this context, and work perfectly when animated, but I also need the purple contraption on the right to start at an angle, and then rotate downward as the slide extends. The only problem is that every time I try to make a gear relationship between the two yellow cylinders (what I use the animate task on to test) and the mechanism, the mechanism snaps into place where I don't want it to! How do I stop this from happening?
Before gear relationship (where I want it to be):
After gear relationahip (bad):
How can I make the gear relationship without causing that revolute mate to go to this position?

You can edit the rotation of the mate connector used, or you can assign an angle to the mate itself to create the right abount of offset needed for the starting position. Then add min/max limits to keep it in a range that makes sense.
