Imported step file trouble extruding

joe_normyljoe_normyl Member Posts: 2

Hello. I am relatively new to 3D modeling but have been using OnShape to make designs for 3D printing for about a year. I understand most of the basics of sketches and extrusions and have played around with revolves, lofts, sweeps etc. One thing I would like to get better at is remixing designs. To that point I have uploaded a STEP file for a mahjong set thinking I might modify it for a gift (adding English numbers, maybe some other little touches). When I look at the imports it shows the part for each tile, but the images on the tiles show up as curves and are just drawn on top. I seem to be unable to extrude these and I am not sure how to proceed without just redrawing each curve in a sketch and that seems overly laborious. I have tried to search for tutorials and solutions for working with curves but because of the generic language it is difficult to find what I need. Here is the document I'm working with:

Any help is appreciated!

Importing in exchange formats can be a hassle, not only in OnShape. So it can be the import from OnShape but also the STEP file itself that is the issue.

As far as I I can see in the model redrawing the curves is the only option.

Can you share the STEP file? A link would be ok.

@joe_normyl One method you can use is to split face first, then move face. But some of the graphics are not closed loops or overlap so you might need to clean that up with additional sketch entities for addition to the split face features. The other method is to import the entities from the dxf file to a sketch for creating an extrusion but I would break them up before importing because onshape will slow to a halt bringing in that many entities in all at once if it does it all.

@Spook68 The step files are contained in the cad iimports folder of the document.
