plane ... csys orientation (?) control?

kyle_altendorfkyle_altendorf Member Posts: 42

I have drawn this highlighted sketch on the presently horizontal Plane 1. It is referencing mutliple previous entities from previous sketch(es). I would like to either redefine Plane 1 or move the sketch to Plane 2. I realized that the orientation was silly and not at all aligned with the mechanical loads. :] That's all fine and simple except that the sketch flips the opposite direction than I want and is very broken. Now I certainly could just redraw it, but as per usual me I'm looking to learn about what I think is the cause of the sketch inverting.

When shifting from Plane 1 to Plane 2 the primary intention of change of the sketch, other than the plane, is to use the lowest highlighted point as the replacement reference for the right-most highlighted point. Note that 'up' in Plane 1 is towards the relevant original reference point while 'up' in Plane 2 is away from the new reference point.

Is it possible (within the UI, not featurescript) to orient the plane 'upside down'? I've tried to go through the combinations of flipping the plane normal and changing the angle of the 'line angle' plane definition with no success at controlling this aspect of the orientation. It seems like OnShape is perhaps always picking 'up' in the plane to be favored towards 'up' according to the part studio csys.

I will likely end up just redrawing this sketch, or perhaps making a small featurescript to try to more completely control the plane orientation, but would also be interested to understand any more complete control I can have over planes via the UI.

Thanks for any help.

Cheers,

-kyle

Use a Mate connector instead of a Plane

Thanks! So I had thought to use a mate connector due to the extra orientation control… but I messed it up by then putting a plane on the mate connector and using that. Orienting the mate connect as desired and then having the sketch use the mate connector worked even better than expected.

I think this might fix some other issues I was having with patterning a sketch/plane where the sketch was updating at each angle, so bonus points for you.
