Cloning a sketch

francois_leclercfrancois_leclerc Member Posts: 6

I have a sketch that I want to use multiple times but that distribution does not follow a linear or circular distribution. I want to know if it's possible to use a sketch as an object from which any modification would affect all the instances when that object is used.

Can you be a little more specific about what the sketch complexity is like, the relative number and what the features are that you’re trying to create with the sketches? There are a number of ways to solve things like this that might be very different depending on your needs and goals.

What type of distribution? does it have to be parametric?
usually the sketch is making something else, why not pattern that?

you could use a curve pattern set to feature.

or use the pattern transform FS (from one point/mate connector to multiple others) set to feature.

should the content of the sketch also change? then use increment variables FS to do so. (don't forget to include as a feature and check 'reapply feature')

To further illustrate my problem, I'll give you a description of what I would like to be able to do. I am planning a storage case for arrows with 3 feathers as fletching. You can also think of it as a rocket with 3 or 4 fins. I also want to design one for arrows that are fletched with 4 feathers. The feathers are the same size. The free space and the surrounding walls for those feathers are therefore constant. That space can use a circular pattern to be placed around the space for the arrow shaft but that's not the problem. The problem is that I have to manually update that sketch in separate studios whenever I tweak it (assuming I am not using a variable studio which is shared by all parts studios in my project - I know that much). Is there a way to create a sketch that will be reproduced in any number of other part studios automatically.

The same would apply when using a logo to emboss on top of the face of an object without having to copy the sketch of that logo to multiple part studios when updating the logo.

I want to have a sketch that can be used the same way a variable is used when placed in a Variable studio. A variable defined in a Variable studio is defined it once and is updated on all the part studios when the value changes.

Make a master part (rather than a sketch) of the feather or logo and then derive it into as many other part studios as you wish. When the master part is updated, it will update in the subsequent studios.

    in addition to nicks input:
If you create that master part in a different document, you'll get version control, but not instant automation.
If it's in the same document, update would be instant.
you could make a sinlge configurable master part. with 3 or 4 feathers.

As an intermediate option: you could derive the master parts in a part studio in another document 2. and then derive those parts form that part studio into a whole bunch of part studio's in the same document 2. In that case you'd only have to update to a new version in one part studio for it to update all part studio's in document 2. this daisy chaining solution would create multiple sources of truth, so it takes some extra care…
