Using the Loft tool between two surfaces (beginner question)

Hey out there,
I am trying to generate a loft between two surfaces. The magenta lines show pretty much exactly what I want, but there is just one more error I am unable to figure out.
Could you point me in the wright direction ?

When solids don't work, I often revert to surfaces.
Here's a quick stab. Not the prettiest contour, but it works.

You can tell in the magenta profiles, that the loft is 'rotating' about an axis within it's own geometry, So it's creating self intersecting geometry here:
and like matt said: best too thicken later in the tree.
