Roadmap of improvements/updates

Henk_de_VlaamHenk_de_Vlaam Member, Developers Posts: 243 ✭✭✭

The future promises a nice and impressive CAD system. However, despite regular updates/improvements it has not yet reached the level of established systems and is therefore not yet fully usable for advanced engineering and drafting. Some basic features and functionality are still missing.

Is there a roadmap of the developments and times of release?

Hey @henk_d_v, could you please elaborate on what basic features/functionality you view to still be missing?

@henk_d_v We do not share exact roadmaps or delivery times on new features.  We evaluate where the need is and make plans to address functionality gaps.  If you have suggestions you can submit them as improvements.  You can also look over the list of improvement that are public here: https://forum.onshape.com/categories/improvement-requests and get an idea of what is being asked for.

@lougallo Thank you, I'll have a look at the improvement list.

    @bradley_sauln
I use Creo every day and sometimes SW. Things I use on a regular base and miss in OS are:

    Global modeling:
    • Array of variables more insightful e.g. like Family tables (Creo) or Configs (SW). OS' array of variables are hard to use with big arrays. One like to make different parts/assies using arrays.
    • Nice to have: Show child/parents relation of individual features in feature tree
    Part modeling:
    • Sheet metal
    • Standard part library
    • Surface modeling
    • Sketch improvements e.g. Projection on surface
    • Attach tolerances to dimensions
    • Flexible parts (preferenced way: Creo, not Solidworks)

    Assembly:

    • Replace/exchange (family) parts
    • Tolerance stack calculations. That also means: tolerances should be included in part model dimensions

    Drawing:

    • Layers
    • (Ex)Change the (family) part/assy model per view
    • Thread cosmetic visible
    • Show center lines of cilindrical geometry automatically
    • Broken view
    • Show sketch/model dimensions. Preferable 2-way associativity (which I understood is not possible in OS)
    • Section lines locked at model entity. Now the sections moves over the view model when the model shape is changed. Costs repair time.
    • Show model dimension tolerances (see part modeling)
Of course there are more specific ones but when most these features are not incorporated in OS then for me OS is not ready to use in a professional way.
Maybe some ot these wishes are already implemented, but I could not find them. Apologies then.

Question is: what level of functionality will OS reach in future?
Per individual is then the question: is it at this moment worth spending time on a system that wil never reach ones expected level? Some insite information will help then.
