trying to remove the middle of concentric circles with extrude only removes the whole sketch

so i was trying to make a ball bearing assemble. i started my sketch with a circle, then made a second and used the concentric constraint. it aligned the circles as i wanted, gave them dimensions and all. however, when i used extrude to remove the middle section, the whole sketch would remove from the page. tried several ways till something worked, but was disappointed because something i thought should take 30 seconds to do took hours to finally make right. this was a few days ago so now i do not remember what i did to make it work, but it took a long time. i kind of likened it to the old paint program where you use the bucket feature to fill the color in, but if your bit map had a gap, the whole page would change color not the work you did. i seem to remember the circles were blue and not black, but nothing i did would make them black like they were "solid", kind of like a line and circle after a tangent constraint. what am i missing? thanks in advance for any help!

If I have a hard time determining where the freedom is, I often just click on a point on the sketch and attempt to drag it around. This usually helps pinpoint what entities are unconstrained. In your case, the center of the circle was likely missing a constraint which would cause the circles to not be fully constrained. As for the extrude, the resulting body depends on what part of the sketch you select for the extrude. If you were to select the closed region between the two concentric circles then you would be able to construct the outer shell with one extrude. Check out the screenshot below to see what I am talking about.

Tim, i think what what you are saying is to only extrude the outer shell. i do see now how that could be done in one extrude...less steps. i made the two concentric circles and extruded both to the same hight and then tried to make the middle remove. Looks like way more work for the same result! i will try that recommendation when things aren't yet constrained and see if i can lock it down before proceeding.
Neil, after i would attempt my extrude in this case, it would remove everything from the page. other extrudes i have done with the remove feature only removed the desired portion and left the rest, without hiding anything. i will play around some more and try to recreate the event and do as both of you have recommended.
it is my desire to be proficient with this program. with this kind of help, i will definitely get there! i really appreciate this program and all of you who make it happen for all of us. thank you so much!5
