How can I specify the direction to make an (assembly) linear pattern of cylindrical parts

I have a part that is a simple cylinder and I want to make many instances of this part in an assembly where they positioned in a linear pattern (sitting in a row) with their bases all in the same plane. There is no face on the part that I can use to specify the direction of the linear array other than the top and bottom, but that causes the cylinders to be stacked, not side-by-side.
