Loft Guides: Is a Guide Spline Required For Each Vertex

As stated in the title, I am trying to loft between two faces that each have 4 vertices. I want to guide this loft but if I try to guide it using only one vertex, the loft has self intersecting segments and I get an error. Is there a way to have only one guide that guides the entire loft using only one guide spline?
