Insert/move parts & assemblies

I know this is probably a stupid question but here goes.
When creating a new document, I wish to reuse parts and assemblies from other documents. I know I can INSERT from another document but then the item doesn't appear as a tab in the new document. I can also MOVE an item from another document into the one I'm working on but then the tab disappears from the original document. The functionality I need is COPY from another source so it would then appear as tabs in both documents.
So, how to do this? There's probably some little checkbox I've missed.
