Inheriting an Assembly

I'm interested in what other people look for in an assembly they just received. How do you understand it's design intent and learn it well enough to make changes to it. Do you go through a routine looking for different things in the assembly. Do you assess the assembly's viability and have you ever started over? Do you try to match the originators style and create features the way they did?
