Splitting sketch line at intersection of other lines

I'm working my way through the excellent sprocket tutorial here: https://www.onshape.com/videos/lets-make-a-sprocket and have hit a snag I think. We have a number of co-incident lines and circles and I need to split them so I can only select certain segments for mirroring. The splits must occur at the points where the lines/circles intersect one another, so there's ambiguity about which shape you are actually splitting. I can never seem to split the shape I need to split - when I find the coincident point, it appears to add the split to the other coincident shape.
I would have thought that pre-selecting the shape you wanted to split might prevent the other shape from being affected, but this is not the case.
Is there a trick to choosing which of two intersecting shapes you can split?

Use the split tool here. To help with the selection of the shape add the split on the desired shape, then drag the point to the intersection after splitting.5
