Creating model of sponge bone of a vertebra

Hi guys, as i said in the title, my goal is to create a new part which simulate spongy bone in a vertebra. It has to mantain same geometry of the given model, and has to be smaller. I've alredy tried scaling (uniformly or non-) the initial geometry but it doesn't work because it would be necessary a non-linear scaling.
Do you know some way to do this?
