How do I make this geometry work?

Noa_LetrouitNoa_Letrouit Member Posts: 1 EDU

So, I've been trying to make a realistic ionian column and the main feature of those is the volutes. They have some unusual geometry and I am stuck because Onshape refuses to make sweeps that intersect themselves. Does anyone have suggestions? see the volutes on the photo for reference

make it in 2 or more sweep parts and use boolean to combine them. not guaranteed to be stress free but might get you there.

Depending on the accuracy and level of detail, a solid-modeling CAD may not be the best tool for the job.

There are AI's available nowadays that can generate point clouds or stl's from pictures. that may be intersting and then import to edit further with mixed modeling.

else on this particular sweep issue: try a surface sweep of only the top faces. those should be possible without the self-intersection.
then you'll have to add a ruled surfaces and do some trimming etc to make a solid out of it later.
