Where should I build my frame?

digitalcarbondigitalcarbon Member Posts: 79 PRO

I always have trouble with this. Also it's more that just frames its anything that gets duplicated in a part studio.

A duplicated part shows up twice on the eventual assembly BOM which limits how much i can build in a part studio.

How does everyone else do it?

Your not alone. This is what everyone is dealing with too.

There are two issues / lacking functionality that you are running into here:

    1. The Onshape assembly bom only counts duplicate parts properly if they were duplicated from within the assembly.
      1. Work-around: Do exactly what you are doing now, and re-build the parts in the assembly.
      2. Work-around: Use the frame Cut-list tool in the part studio, and use that as your frame "bom", composite all your frames together as a closed composite. Here is the Cut list+ feature that has a bit more functionality than the default for helping with this. There are two problems with this: now you don't have a single bom, but two; and you have other parts besides frames that you are having to deal with in the single part studio approach.
      3. I've talked with Onshape, they don't have any immediate improvements for this, so we are stuck with this. There are some tips and tricks you can do to make this process a little easier. For example you can use some guide parts for frame placement that will be excluded from the bom. You can mark these parts with a patterned shape in the part studio, then use that "mark" to help use the Replicate tool in the assembly for quickly patterning your frames along the guide part.
    2. Assembly mirror. This is an approved improvement request and is coming to Onshape at some point in the future. It isn't here now, so your current options include re-building the mirrored parts manually, or using a tool like Renaissance to mirror parts within your assembly.

    .

Here is an example of how the replicate tool works:

Note that you can exclude the guide part from the bom by changing the part properties of that part:

    Thanks.

btw I know exactly what you are building.

I'm betting on Assembly Mirror dropping in one of the next few updates, but while we're all waiting I'll go ahead and plug my Lefty Flip script for your consideration. I've been using it to create left hand configurations of my part studios with one feature suppressed and unsuppressed depending on what you need in the assembly.
