Can I Split a Sheet Metal part

Hi,
I just want to confirm and figure out a work around for what I'm trying to do.
It looks like the split command cannot be used on an unfinished sheet metal part. Is that true? and if so, can it be fixed? Or at least make it so i can finish a sheet metal part, split it, and then make a new sheet metal part to keep editing it as a sheet metal part?
I'm trying to take a part, split it, and then add flanges so that i can bolt the two split parts together without going through and designing two new parts (Image 1). I know that this is a function I can do in Solidworks but seems like not in onshape.
My workaround which I don't think is as slick is to do a really thin extrude cut to split the parts and then work from there. but now with a gap between the two (Image 2). So not much more work but not as nice.

Thin extrude is how I split Sheetmetal parts too or put seams in desired locations on cylinders on a soft fail sheet metal part to make sucessfull flat pattern. This method works fine I think and is possibly more flexiable as you can draw a line on a surface to pick where you want the seam to be. This still works with a mid plane thin remove extrude even 0.001mm thick so gap is so so so small. If the gap is still anoying you? You can do move face up to entity after the thin remove extrude to remove any gap before applying any further features or flanges.
