New FeatureScript: Cosmetic Knurl

sebastian_glanznersebastian_glanzner Member, Developers Posts: 482 PRO
Hello everyone,

I released my Cosmetic Knurl FeatureScript:

https://cad.onshape.com/documents/0bad5bfa3637bf84138a2a24/w/3daa9f730d6802a81ead8a58/e/af28a7d9efffdd0020743e56

This should help if the 3D modeled knurls are taking to long to regenerate  B)
You can also type in a custom name and then the name is shown in the feature tree.

Be careful with the "Checkered Knurl" this can get heavy quickly.
Use the scale number to change the number of generated edges.

This feature in brilliant.  Has anyone seen similar functionality for cosmetic threads?

Not sure exactly what you mean by "cosmetic" threads (there are several ways these can be done), I would recommend the Threadlab FS if you haven't tried it already. I has a "cosmetic" option that jus does a spiral curve as well as full 3D cut thread options.

@matthew_stacy, as an example, this is my solution to cosmetic threads.
It has the look and feel of SW, or Inventor cosmetic threads - this was done with decals, and a little manipulation. To help understand what I did, you might want to do a deep dive into the configuration tables. If you like it, maybe this can help you (or start you down your own road) - we all have different ideas.
Sorry if this got off topic. Love the knurl by the way.

Do the cosmetic knurls show up in drawings views?

  • sebastian_glanznersebastian_glanzner Member, Developers Posts: 482 PRO

    Yes

Can someone please explain, how to actually use this? It creates some lines on the surface and then what?

  • MichaelPascoeMichaelPascoe Member Posts: 2,813 PRO

@zy_su to use this you will need to click the link above and add the custom feature to your toolbar. From there, you will then be able to access that tool in your own part studios.

The tool requires you to click a face, then it will automatically add lines to the face. This is for cosmetic purposes since the Knurls are added via machining and don't need to be created in the model unless you are 3D printing.

Ah ok. My purpose is 3d printing. I assumed this extension creates the grid template on the surface, and I could use some other tool to then extrude in or out to create the 3d knurl pattern.

You could have some sketches then sweep them along the cosmetic paths to remove the material.

Or you could use the Texture  custom feature to get a similar result.

Cool! Out of curiosity, how is this different from the Knurl featurescript, https://cad.onshape.com/documents/c7ae47cc55b06d4cb25dbf94/v/6611ebf44f8d8de64e9fc490/e/d4ae4ba12d78906faa19ca26?jumpToIndex=13636 ?

@kenn_sebesta167 If you are referring to the texture feature, then the difference is that texture uses a different technique to make the geometry, not a true knurl but rather it just patterns shapes onto the face. You probably know already but a true knurl is made by sweeping a tool along a path in a hatching motion; probably what the knurl feature does. I didn't know that feature existed, cool!

If you are referring to the cosmetic knurl, then the difference is that the cosmetic knurl only splits the face of the part for cosmetic purposes to save regen time since you usually machine the knurl rather than 3d printing it. There is not usually a need to model the knurl.

@zy_su You're looking for this script for printable knurling. Be warned it's a slow build time so use it sparingly.
