Gun checkering texture

Wondering if there's a fs out there that someone knows of to do gun checkering? I tried Pascoe's texture tool with diamond pattern but it not exactly representative of what I'm going for as its got spaces and sizing all wrong.

Try patterning a sweep as if it were a tool cutting the material, similar to how knurling would be machined.

if it's on a flat surface Grid Extrude is a good option.

I have done knurling like that. but this is not quite as simple of a surface to apply it to. Was hoping there was an alternative.

Do you have a reference image of your end goal? We can probably achieve it. Not sure exactly what you are going for.

Good point guess that would help. This is the original piece. the checkering is filled with dirt in this case but its a diamond pattern.

Are you printing it or machining it? Just looks like standard knurling to me.

printing. I'm not required to put it on. but thought I'd give it a go. define standard. Its on an concave and convex surface. I can define a sweep cut and pattern it but I suspect it will lose touch with the part at some point in an attempt to pattern it. Haven't tried it yet but its looking like that's what I'll need to do. Either that or learn some blender skills.

You can do that with texture, or with a feature pattern:

Note that feature patterns are currently a bit broken with sketches. So if it doesn't work, you will have to use a work around until the pattern accepts your tree.
This was tricky as it required a sketch to be projected to the compound surface. Using a mate connector and the pierce constraint seems to work well. Implicit mate connectors do not work well in feature patterns at the moment though, so make sure it's a normal mate connector and that nothing in the sketch is constrained in a permanent non moving way if that makes sence.

Woah. What in the tarnation? I need to study up on how you used that as a linear feature pattern. The brain is not braining on that one yet. Thanks for whipping that up. I'll see if I can make it work on my part.
