Standard content component requests

Jason_SJason_S Moderator, Onshape Employees, Developers Posts: 210
We at Onshape are committed to helping our users get their job done. We released Standard content at the beginning of the year with enough components to get many users started, knowing that our content library will continue to evolve over time. We want to see what components users want to see next.

Please let us know below what content you would like to see. A standard, a component name and a link to to the standard would help us a lot. Gathering reliable standards and modeling these components takes some time so please hold on as we get these out as soon as possible.

    Hi Jason, excellent :)

Are we talking fasteners only at this stage or are we free to nominate other stuff like bearings, toggle clamps, USB connectors etc?

    Cheers,

Let's keep it to fasteners only right now. I totally recognize the need for other types of off the shelf components, but we have other plans in store for those.

Seriously was looking for a set screw the other day - hope that helps.

If we could get access to McMaster Carr's library of STEP/SLDPRT files that would be fantastic
Looks like I posted right after you re: the McMaster Carr stuff. :)

As an aside I would like this request for feedback to be more about what OS can offer natively rather than dealing with STEP and SLDPT files. Maybe that's too much to ask but it seems that is what they are asking for??

I'm needing these in a current design.

    @larry_hawes ,
    1. Posting McMaster links without descriptions of what you are looking for doesn't help us help you. The links bring me to just the front of McMaster's screws/ set screws. Images with descriptions and standard names help us make sure we get the correct component.
    2. We support every set screw that Solidworks has in ANSI and ISO today. I don't know what you are looking for.
The list of set screws we support includes:

    ANSI
    Slotted Set Screw Cone Point
    Slotted Set Screw Cup Point
    Slotted Set Screw Flat Point
    Slotted Set Screw Dog Point
Slotted Set Screw Half Dog Point
    Slotted Set Screw Oval Point

Square Head Set Screw Cone Point
Square Head Set Screw Cup Point
Square Head Set Screw Flat Point
Square Head Set Screw Dog Point
Square Head Set Screw Half Dog Point
Square Head Set Screw Oval Point

    Socket Set Screw Cup Point
    Socket Set Screw Flat Point
Socket Set Screw Half Dog Point
    Socket Set Screw Oval Point
    Socket Set Screw Cone Point

    ISO
Slotted Set Screw Cone Point ISO 7434
Slotted Set Screw Cup Point ISO 7436
Slotted Set Screw Flat Point ISO 4766
Slotted Set Screw Dog Point ISO 7435

Socket Set Screw Cup Point ISO 4029
Socket Set Screw Flat Point ISO 4026
Socket Set Screw Dog Point ISO 4028
Socket Set Screw Cone Point ISO 4027

My bad Jason, I was not aware of the entire screw list that you support. Looks excellent and am afraid I won't be able to add to your list until I come up against something that is not in the list. Thank you for explaining and demonstrating how complete the list already is.

DIN standard hardware would be great.
I don't know all of the standard numbers, but here are some I've pulled from McMaster that I know I've used from there. I'm sure that there are others.

    Socket Head Cap Screws
    DIN 7984
    DIN 912

    Nylon Locking Nuts
    DIN 985

    Washers
    DIN 125

    Set Screws
    DIN 913
    DIN 916

    Hi Jason, thanks understood.

My first proposal is dowty washers also known as bonded seals.

I'm afraid I've not found a standard yet.

Thanks all! This is a great start. Keep them coming.

@owen_sparks I believe Intertraco is a supplier of the Dowty washers, and they own the IP of these fasteners (I may be mistaken). Much like Penn Engineering and the PEM® fasteners (https://www.pemnet.com/)

We cannot guarantee the accuracy of these fasteners if there is not an official standard to go off of. Otherwise we will have many users using our content and running into assembly issues after parts are already made because the vendor they ordered from was different than the one we chose. This is a situation no one wants.

I know I have been bitten before when designing around an "official" model from my supplier in the past.

    Thanks @bryan_lagrange

Those PDFs definitely help. Unfortunately they are missing dimensions to protect IP/copy write of the standard, but there is this line on a few of them.
Many PEM® self clinching nuts in this bulletin are dimensionally equivalent to nuts manufactured to NASM45938/1.
We will purchase the NASPEC and MILSPEC standards associated with as many as possible.

Stuff like PEM fastners are begging for their own featurescript that not only creates the part but puts the proper sized interference fit hole in the mating part.

I like to have also micro screws/components.

For example: the hole feature contains the ISO M1, M1.1, M1.2, M1.4 and M1.8 holes. The standard component Slotted cheese head screw  ISO 1207 lacks these dimensions. This applies also for other (ISO) components.

So please, sync the component threads with the available threaded holes.

    Hi @H_d_V

Per ISO 1207:2011 for the slotted cheese head screw shows the smallest thread size is M1.6 and then goes to M2 and M2.5.

We understand that you might be able source these components in these sizes, but they do not follow the current standard and any manufacturer of this hardware in the sizes you listed is not following the standard. The sizes you mention might be following a withdrawn standard, therefore might not be available to others.

Designing with hardware that may not sourceable currently or in the future is something we are trying to prevent.

    @Jason_S we've even got a standard for these "ISO 8734B" :)

BTW thanks for the Dowty info, you learn something every day.

    Hi @Jason_S,

I understand that I've not been clear because I should have written "But please..." instead of "So please...".
This because I know that the small dims are not present in the ISO. In the former DIN 84 they were present,  so be it...

So, it looks like that the only way to obtain these screws, bolts etc. - also in future -  is to download or to create (own library configurations).

Thank you, I understand your answer.

Any chance the native standard parts "source code" will be open-sourced just like featurescipt?

Or feature script equivalent to assembly workspace to create & mount company specific standard parts..  B)
