You will need to use a rendering app from the app store
https://appstore.onshape.com/apps/Rendering?sort=featured

How exactly does it work.0
-
Depends on which app you select.
but the one I used before, you import your model into OneRender, then you drag and drop colors / textures onto your model.
Then you can adjust lighting etc.
Then you can save the image back to Onshape0 -
john_mcclary I was wondering how to save the image back to onshape

I'm having a hard time getting OneRender, Claria.IO to open a model.
but here is where it is in RealityServer

Yes, but where is the setting to save it back to onshape, I Can't find the setting from your picture.

You will only be able to save images in jpeg or png back to Onshape as a tab. The textures will not load on to the 3d model in the Onshape workspaces.0
-
Can I then print them on the 3D printer with the texture?
If so how?0 -
Rendering is graphical only.
If you need something 3d printed, you will need to model it with the part.
Rendering is to simulate what a part looks like after paint/finishing. Not part of the manufacturing0 -
Do you have an image or a link to what you are trying to texture and may be able to help you find a method0
-
Well I'm only trying out and testing but maybe you could help me with that, I will post the Onshape document and tell me if it's going to work out.
Thanks

I am trying to make a Moon and full sized moon, if that helps. Here is the document.

you will have to make those public so we can view them

It's just a blank sphere, so I assume you planned on overlaying a moon surface texture then having emboss onto the sphere?
Well as much as I don't want to advertise SW, They just introduced this feature in 2019 https://youtu.be/DW89pQRwbnc?t=888
As for here, what we can do will be to create each creator by patterning / scaling. But it would be more of an art project.
If you want a true life moon surface quickly, from a skin texture. Onshape has a long way to go on that.
Sorry, not the answer you wanted to hear, but it's not that it can't be done.. but there sure are a lot of creators on the surface of the moon
For a more artistic version with only a few creators. I would start by drawing up a few creators with slightly different shapes.
Add a bunch of points to the outside surface like a grid (may be a featurescript for that)
Then use something like:
Point pattern: https://cad.onshape.com/documents/579ff593e4b06fddb8ba0554/v/c4ad6e57d8aef03b89e93dab/e/0006cc6ad7b70ef30732a1e0
and
Non-Uniform Scale: http://https//cad.onshape.com/documents/c3f3651d28491d28eefba7d3/v/b5b79e36ef390264d2763eaf/e/8861bf8269d47b0a76aa4c1f
to randomly place and misshape them
then boolean add everything as one part.
Hope that helps, or gives you an idea on how ("I") would approach this0 -
@john_mcclary
Thank you for your help, are there any other programs where I could import that sphere, give it texture, than importing back onto onshape with the texture on it?0 -
Not that I am aware of. I just know of SW because we still use it along side Onshape at work. I always check out the updates when they come out.
We haven't upgraded SW yet so I don't even know how well it works.

what I am trying to do is to apply a "hammered" or "handmade clay" look to my model. I will attach an image to show what i mean by this. how do i achieve this in a rather random fashion, or any fashion at all? Right now, (April 12, 2021), RealityServer is not available on OnShape, so how do I do this? I am also needing to be able to 3D Print my model with this texture when I am done!
