Computer specifications

Hello! My compnay is going to change my computer as I hava some problems when I work with several programs. For example, when I'm desining with OnShape, and I do a ciruclar pattern, with a lot of repetitions (200 fe), my browser spends a long time thinkking. Does OnShape has any specefications regarding the computer to use? Could you give me some tips that would improve my use of OnShape?

Thank you :)

Hi @meritxell_costa - your computer spec will not make much difference to the speed it takes Onshape to compute a pattern as all that processing is done in the cloud. The only consideration is the amount of graphics you have on screen. If you are working on large assemblies, you will need a better graphics card and more RAM for the browser to be able to store the data in memory. You can use the comparative figures displayed at https://cad.onshape.com/check to see how good your graphics card is. This will make large assemblies rotate faster on screen, and more RAM will enable you to have more Onshape windows open at a time.

If your patterns are slow, maybe we can suggest alternative ways to model that will speed it up, but changing your computer is not one of them. Hope this helps.

In general, your computer needs to have similar specs to a gaming pc because Onshape works kind of like games do. Here is the Onshape benchmark test, in my opinion, if the computer is not maxing this out, it is not a good computer for Onshape: https://cad.onshape.com/check

    Using Windows, I was running:
    Processor: Intel i7
    Graphics card: gtx 1070 Super
    RAM: 16g

This was good for most applications, however with larger assemblies and part studios, it was slow.

My current set up is much faster when loading larger part studios and assemblies, but also more expensive:
    Processor: Ryzen 9 5900HX
    Graphics card: RTX 3080 16GB
    RAM: 32g

If you prefer Apple, here is a forum post that may help: https://forum.onshape.com/discussion/comment/66045#Comment_1

The thing is that I need to change the computer, as it's old, so, I would like to know which specifications would you recommend, please.

    Thank you very much :)

Perhaps some other users can chime in with their current setups? We have a hardware recommendations document here: https://learn.onshape.com/learn/article/hardware-recommendations but that just repeats what I said above. Latest MacBooks with M1 chips are great, but I don't know about Windows, sorry. I guess it depends on what other software you need to run on your computer, but Onshape's requirements are a lot less in general.
