  You will have to create a small slit running the length of the tube to convert it.

  Tried this by creating a open tube as a sheet metal part.

  

  What I need Left, Onshape right.

  Managed to get Onshape to do what I want how I want it.

  I had to exclude a lot of faces making the process overly complicated. Because the part cant unfold (like tubes cant) I get a warning.

  

  Left = Sketch(inner and outer region) + extrude/add + extrude/remove +sheetmetal/convert(exclude all upper, lower and inner faces + change direction)

  Middle=[SW part] Sketch(outer region) + Extrude/Thin Feature + Cut + Convert(collect bends)

  Right=Sketch(outer region) + Sheetmetal(change direction) + extrude/remove (result was failure not 45deg)

  Nice method because it preserves the original length. The downfall is it produces the perpendicular extra bit of steel I would like to prevent having. SolidWorks produces that bit as well.
  

  
  

  Making the "Extrude_remove" sketch like this prevents this behavior. But is there another way?

  
  

  Because of topological naming of surfaces this method is not usable for a highly configurable part because you would have to keep re-selecting surfaces in the sheet metal model.
