Extruding in the correct plane

positronicmanpositronicman Member Posts: 1
Hello, total newb here who is just learning Onshape from the ground up.

What I want to do: I am trying to design what amounts to a fan housing.  I have the outer ring done and am trying to add cross pieces so that I can mount the fan itself (imagine a circle with an 'x' across it).

How I am trying to do it: I am sketching lines to form the 'x' on the top edge of the ring.  I want to do a symmetric surface extrude to give my intersecting lines some dimensionality in the x/y.

What is going wrong: After 30-45 minutes futzing, I can still only get my lines to extrude along the z dimension.

Please help.
