Why can't i add the dimension when i click the part and dimensions. the part wont even select

in Using Onshape
selecting the part wont select, therefore i cannot add the details of dimensions. Why can't i add the dimensions?

    Hi @kaiser_meer I’m sorry to hear you are having problems. However, your question is rather vague. Perhaps you can create a video of what you are experiencing and post it here?

    Do you have edit permissions? If there is a large bar of icons along the bottom of the screen then the doc is read-only and you must make a copy first.

    Also are you in a partstudio or assembly or drawing? 

    You can't edit a part in an assembly like you can in SW for example.
