How to remove channel on cylinder

There's got to be a simple answer to this but I just can't figure it out. 
I need to cut a half-circle around the outside of a cylinder. I think I need to use the sweep command because I need to follow a path. 

Here's an image of how I would like the channel to go:

This is very easy on a rectangle but can't get it to work on an extruded cylinder

Use the Wrap feature to create the path first, then use Sweep.

Hi Neil. Thanks for your quick response! Sorry but I missed your response till now. 
I have spent a fair amount of time trying to get your suggestion to work. Would it be possible for you to create a quick cylinder and cut a path similar to what I have so I can see all the details?

Hi Bruce,
Sorry to be a pest.. I pretty much have it working thanks to your example.
But in the end there is an odd piece of surface material there. I can't figure out what is causing it.

Hey Steve. I'm a novice using Onshape. Love it! I fooled around with a copy of your document and I think I had the result you seek by closing the sketch of the sweep profile by creating a full circle instead of an arc to use as the sweep profile. I chose the left side of the surface as the path start. The dark grey artifact in your post is the surface you created with the Wrap feature. Just turn it off in the Surfaces list. - Scotty

Thanks for looking into my problem! I'm relatively new also but having so much fun with OnShape.
I didn't realize that the grey mate
I did try your suggestion making a circle but still get about the same results. Could you share your drawing so I can make sure I am doing the same?

Anton,
I am now able to recreate what you did. 
I'm not sure I understand why this is happening but now I see that if my sketch overlaps the wrap then I get those artifacts.
