How to convert 3D Curves to Construction Geometry?

matthew_stacymatthew_stacy Member Posts: 487 PRO
Is it possible to convert any of the 3D curves (Helix, 3D fit spline, Projected curve, Bridging curve, Intersection curve) to construction geometry (dashed rather than solid)?

Sorry, no. Only for sketch geom. Though you can change line font in drawings.

The way OS handles curves is more or less the same as solid and surface bodies. It would be nice if similar to solids/surfaces you could assign a color and maybe line font.

Though not ideal, if you make a curve into a composite part, you can change the colour.

Is this working again? I had used it in the past but last time I tried it I couldn't get it to work...

I ran into this today too. Didn't seem to work anymore.

Huh, you're right. Haven't used it since the original face colours demo.

I could not make this work either.  I made a composite part from the curve and edited the appearance; but there did not appear to be any detectable color change in the visual display.

    Thanks for the responses everyone.

Is there any IR for this? Just came across a situation where I want dashed lines generated by a custom feature, but you cannot show sketches created by custom features in drawings.

@chadstolzfus I am not aware of an IR having been submitted to convert 3d curves to construction geometry yet.  What is the geometry created by your custom feature?

It's a pretty simple custom feature that ultimately just does a Move Face, but the user might want to see the original location of the face in the drawing in order to indicate scribe on cabinet parts.

What I do in the custom feature is I grab all edges belonging to the face selected for an opOffsetFace(), then I perform an opExtractWires() on those edges. This produces the lines on the part without splitting the faces, which is what I'm looking for.

Unfortunately, it's difficult to tell if the solid line in the drawing is indicating scribe or a separate part, where construction geometry would indicate that to our manufacturing floor a little better.

I've tried creating construction lines in a sketch within that custom feature instead, but you cannot grab sketches created by a custom feature in the drawing, even when inserting the entire part studio.
