Making laser cutting files from a 3d model

I am looking to see if there is a quick way to slice a 3d model of a  video game weapon replica into multiple dxf cutting files at 1/8" increments. the parts are to be glued together into their full size parts and then assembled with the other parts of the replica.

Instead of having to offset 10 planes at 1/8" offsets(which is alot of clicking) then get the geometry from each plane individually (more clicking). it would be alot faster to be able to specify an array of planes on the finished model, project the geometry of the model at specified increments to each plane and write each of those sketch geometries into one or multiple dxf files

Essentially this would allow you to make a layered prototype of a model much faster then 3d printing would. all parts and slots  would be designed at 1/8" increments.Bevels and chamfers could be ignored but a bonus feature would be if they would get a green line out put for engraving guide lines.

Otherwise being able to offset multiples planes in one prompt would make it alot less effort.
Thanks!

Does 123Make provide this capability?  Hopefully, I've remembered the name correctly.

Another situation where it would be handy to have the ability to create a stack of planes at a specified spacing would be lofting hulls and fuselages, or any shape which is conventionally conveyed by a 'table of offsets' or a bunch of sectional views.

It would be desirable to be able to easily post-tweak the location of individual planes, for cases where the increments are not strictly even.

If you post the URL link (copy from the browser) to your public model we will have a look at it for you.

First I would start a new Part Studio, and derive the gun from your main part studio in using the "derive" command. This done to keep a the main version uncut.

If you use a surface instead of a plane you will be able to use the array "edit: linear pattern" command on the surface. Then the split command using the surfaces as you tool.

After that you have to export each profile with RMB dxf export. There has been talk about being about to tagging faces for dxf export and then doing the lot in 1 go, this would also suit you.

Smart move, @brucebartlett ! Nice. I hadn't joined those particular dots.

... For the benefit of those needing a bit more flesh on the bones, here's a couple of thoughts:

    1) one easy way to create a planar surface is to sketch a rectangle, then "Loft/Surface" and pick opposite edges

    2) the "array command" Bruce referred to is called "Linear Pattern" in Onshape  :)

    3) When asked for a "direction" in the linear pattern, you can just click on the surface. A (planar) face or plane is a viable indicator of direction: Onshape just takes the "face normal"

Cool idea! Adding support for Epilog and Universal Laser cutters to convert 3D Onshape files into standard slices for lasers would be immensely popular. I notice the TechShops are super popular for making Cosplay weapons by slicing 3D models so maybe there are some Instructables already posted for it.

As of today, with a new document, you can now create one plane with your desired offset and linearly Feature pattern the original offset plane. All of the desired planes can be created with one feature.

You cannot pattern the Front, Top, or Right planes.

There is a 100% free app in the app store that does this - slices, lays out the parts and generates gcode for the laser.

Ok so i got a little carried away with this one, but the app is awesome! :)

Cutting with laser is very interesting job. I read somewhere that 3d metal printing like Selective Laser Melting (SLM) provides sharp cutting edgesThis process gives accurate results with high resolution.
