Force a workspace to update Library Version?

EvanReeseEvanReese Member, Mentor Posts: 2,125 ✭✭✭✭✭
Sometimes old workspaces in old documents don't get updated for some time or at all, but I want to work in there again with the latest feature set. For example I'm in one that still doesn't have thin extrudes and face blends.

If I were to try to merge it into a workspace that had been updated it would let me know about a library version mismatch and prompt an update, but how do I force it to update without a merge?

    You could version the workspace, then branch it again. This will let you update the new branch. Might not be an option for you if it is a public feature and your trying not to notify everyone of a false update. But then again, we have the option to publish now so that may fix that issue?

    Thanks, Michael. Branching again doesn't pull up any option to update that I'm aware of.

    Perhaps I misunderstood. Updating a workspace to the latest Onshape version right?

    Yes. The workspace doesn't have the latest toolset, but versioning and branching it doesn't give the option to update it.

    Has this been solved? I am trying to copy a sketch from one document into another and I get the same message of mismatched library. But I have worked in both documents today and I had to create up to date versions in each several times, so why did this not update the library also?

    @kees_bijker a new update was pushed last night so one doc has been upgraded and the other hasn't yet.

    The way I use Onshape, I generally always want all my documents to be current versions.  Wish there was one box to check, and Onshape would force an update of entire folder (or even a whole project document) instead of having to select each file individually. Especially if those updates happened while offline (is there any way this could be done?). I know what is in all those folders, and I know I want it all updated.
     As I have a large custom library, It takes a lot of time to complete updates manually, whenever I alter content, or Onshape adds new functionality - folder updates could be a big time saver (productivity enhancement). Just a thought - I don't think I'm the only one that would like this (maybe this is the same thing Evan_Reese is saying? - maybe not).

    Short answer is yes. Onshape's API does let you make versions and you could build something that looks at derived/imported parts and update them to the latest version. A version/derived manager that works across documents is something I'd like to build at some point but as it stands that won't be a near future thing.

      The "version/derived manager that works across documents" is exactly what I'd like to see in Onshape's core functionalitySo that the "update all" button   (or a separate checkbox) literally updates all (even derived parts coming from outside the current document), not just the items located in the current document.

    A sure fire way to get a doc to update is to trash it then restore it!  >:)

    @rick_randall

    No, he is not. It's a bit of a hack, but it does work. It feels scary to do, but until they build some other way to do it, it's the quickest solution.
