I'm trying to trim three beams together
i want two to meet the first and then to mitre to each other
I tried the ordered groups but the two diagonals won't splice together.

Try mitering the first two, first, then trim to the other. If that doesn't work you may just have to revert back to normal modelling features.

As @NeilCooke said: Make the angled section with the frame tool, using the miter joint condition. Make the horizontal segment with another frame operation. Then use the trim to face to trim the mitered segments against the horizontal segment. Like so:

Similar to the post the other day
I have circular patterned a spoke that comes down into a pipe  I trimmed it to the centre pipe
but wanted them to trim between themselves as well - as shown above
I trimmed each part to a plane now.
