Onshape mobile performance/Limitation

Has anyone else noticed when Onshape is running on the iPad or iPhone that when loading a large model, it loads the model (and takes a long time to load) but then it finally loads, abruptly quits. This occurs for me on my iPad when loading the Porsche Model (which is public.) Does the iPad run out of video memory?

My guess is you need to update your build. We are routinely updating that application. are you on 1.16.8?
did you get a update notice via email ?:
I did update "TestFlight" (or whatever it is called) just yesterday. Do you think I need to restart my iPad. Could it be the type of iPad I have - mine is a couple of years old?
btw, You need to update the Onshape app from WITHIN testflight.

How much RAM does your iPad have? (See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_iOS_devices#iPad or maybe the Settings app tells you.)
Restarting your device is always worth a try, but I wouldn’t expect it to help. Updating the app is always a good idea — we want you to have the latest and greatest. But we certainly need to improve our handling of large models.
Hi Mark, you can currently download updates for Onshape on iOS via the TestFlight app.
In order to download updates, you must be added as a tester. If you already are a tester, make sure you are signed in with the Apple ID that was added as a tester.
If there aren't any updates, then you may already have the latest build. To do a quick check, you can compare what is currently on TestFlight (1.16.8) and what is on your device. You can check your build on your device by signing in, and tapping on the profile icon on the top right. On the bottom left of your profile, you will see the current build number on your device.
The current process will be temporary and we will switch to updating via the App Store in the near future.
We're not quite to sports car weather here in Massachusetts yet, but I can already see the snow piles starting to give up the fight.
Thanks got it. I currently have 1.16.8.
Unfortunately, still when I load my Porsche model it loads but if I try to spin it, it crashes OS.
@John_F_Carr
Yes, I empathize with all of you back there with 7' drifts in your front yard... Did I tell you it is 76 Deg. here in CA... and boring weather!

Which iPad mini model are you using? The latest iPad mini 3 would be most optimal to use Onshape, but the earlier models should be compatible for using Onshape as well.
Do you have other iOS devices to try? Are you able to open the same model on other iOS devices?
I'm not sure but I think it is a mini-2. It is actually my wife (for me to use... you know how that goes) and will check when I get home tonight.

From settings>general>about: capacity 12.7G 7.4G available version 8.1.2 Model MD531LL/A
i did note that the CPU on my system did a decent amount of work opening Mark's porsche model. average about 20% of my quad core 2.4ghz.
But I was amazed that OS even worked in such old device.. Simple models run very smoothly.
For the iPad 2 and the 1st gen iPad mini, the maximum RAM for both devices is 512MB, with the available RAM being much less. We do our best to control memory usage within our app, but you have any apps running in the background, it may affect your ability to view larger documents. With the newer devices that have >1GB of RAM, we have tested and verified that the general experience is much smoother and can handle much larger documents than devices with 512 MB.
We have implemented some optimizations such that the experience will not be much different between newer and older devices, but the RAM limit is something that will affect which documents you may open and view, and it is an obstacle we are continuously trying to resolve.
Mark Biasotti asked, further up this thread, "How do I update OS on the iPad"
OS is clearly already taken.
Operating System is abbreviated to OS by long-standing convention.
Situations could easily arise where it's not exactly clear what is being asked or said.
It will also rule out meaningful searches on the web.
I would like to suggest OnS as a better alternative abbreviation for Onshape.
(pronounced "On-Ess").
You should propably make a new discussion to get everyone in - I will follow OnS
would you be willing to share that model?
would love to try onshape with some bigger models! thanks!
