Radial Extrude

How soon are you likely to introduce a radial extrude function?

Who knows, but a wild guess might be that he means something similar to what you can achieve by thickening a surface. For instance, thickening a circular surface could perhaps be thought of as a radial extrude.

That would be a tangential extrude, wouldn't it? B)

A wrap function to put text/sketches onto the outside cylindrical surface of a ring would be cool. Maybe this is what he means?

that is exactly what I want to do today... I guess I don't currently have that option? Any easy workarounds?

Wanted to put a flange on the end of tube. To do this, thicken would work, but the ability to do it off the face rather than having to extend the extrude first would be a lot easier - will see what they come out with when they release Sheet Metal Features...

@justin_walker a radial extrude like you describe is unlikely to be implemented (but you never know) because it is a niche application - this is where FeatureScript comes in. Adding a flange on the end of a tube would be simple for someone with a little coding knowledge.

    @3D,

I think you should take a look at our direct editing features. It sounds like what you're looking for can be achieved by Move face by an offset distance:

I realise move face / thicken can achieve similar results - however  to create a flange on the end of a tube, you would have to extrude "New" the thickness you wanted the flange, creating another part effectively, then thicken / move face and then boolean after to unify the component.

Any other simpler method been overlooked?

I would go with sketching the flange and extruding it. It's more flexible and requires only 2 features vs 3 (1 sketch & 1 extrude vs 1 extrude, 1 move face, 1 boolean). A single sketch and extrude doesn't seem like much effort, but I suppose it would add up if this was something you had to do a lot of. If that's the case, I'd look into FeatureScript. This is the type of thing that could easily be automated. In fact, if you're not in a rush I could probably tinker a bit and create a FeatureScript for you.

You could create an Offset plane, apply a Split face to the outside face, then a Move face would have the same result.

Either way you need some way to constrain what area you are looking to effect.

    Best,

Here you go. I think it does pretty much what you wanted.

    FeatureScript Edge Flange

Very nice @mahir_abrahim! It seems very robust too.

@mahir_abrahim did you delete that document? I wanted to take a look but Onshape thinks it's in the trash.

I was asked to clean the file for inclusion into OS' FS collection (or something like that). So I copied my workspace to get rid of extra versions. Here's a link to the new workspace.

Ah, thanks, the name change ("edge flange" -> "end flange") threw me off.

Oops. Sorry about that. It was always Edge Flange, but for some reason I typed it wrong in my earlier post.

If you're still keen to modify it more, you could consider the ability to:
Set Flange thickness equal to original material thickness
Radius / fillet: (Internal Edge = Material thickness & External Edge = Thickness (+ Radius (if internal corner has been filleted)

    Anyway, thanks, great job.

Getting the material thickness is more work than it's worth, but I could probably make it so that the thickness and offset are remembered from the last time. That would make it easier to add same size flanges to same size extrusions.

Material thickness is easy enough to set with variables, but the others would be very useful.
