Boolean operations with imported shapes

I need to use imported shapes as Boolean "tools". I can import these shapes into an Assembly but I can't find a way to do Boolean operations in an Assembly. I can do Boolean operations in a Part Studio but I can't import shapes.
I suspect the answer is staring me in the face but I can't find it.
