Is is possible when using a Planer mate to have the part move only on the Z and not to the mate connectors?

Let's say I have the blue cylinder where I want it on the X&Y and just want to move it to the top of the grey box using a planer mate, or any command just so those two faces are planer, how would I go about that without snapping to a mate?

Depends what you are trying to achieve. If the part is floating in x&y it still needs to be locked down to a mate somewhere. As it stands, you could add a tangent mate to force the faces to be coincident.

It's not so much the mate, it's what happens when you make the mate.  The snapping to the mate connectors that moves the part about the X&Y and not just along the Z.  Just something I need to get use to that's different than my last 3d software.
