Sheet Metal is Coming!

We know how important Sheet Metal is to you.  We have been hard at work and are very close to releasing it to everyone.  As many of you know, we generally don't announce new functionality until it's actually released.  But because this is so important to so many, we wanted to make an exception.  Below is a link to a sneak preview of the Sheet Metal functionality coming soon.

Stay tuned!

@Ben_There are a nice FeatureScript to create weldments.

Unfortunately right now we can't sort and group weldment profiles of the same kind or length...

PD: Onshape, I will be attending "Develop 3D live" in Warwick next March... Maybe, just maybe, it would be nice introduce a complete suite of weldment features and Onshape in Spanish ;-)

    Preview looks impressive!!

I look forward to my first sheetmetal part. I have a couple of SW sheetmetal parts I'd like to replicate in OS.  Should be a good comparison.

The ability to view the folded and flat patterns simultaneously is a great step forward.

Wow...... very nice. After introduction of sheet-metal feature now many industry will think to choose Onshape as there primary CAD tool for design in future. By looking preview video I feel that sheet-metal of Onshape is simpler, faster and more user friendly than other cad tool. I am really excited to explore all feature of sheet-metal :D

Awesome! It is very simple to understand compared to other CAD, so I feel most of the industries could switch to Onshape sheet metal in future

I'm in a similar position.  Sheetmetal looks really useful, just not for what I make. :/

Perhaps we could use it to make the most awsome cardboard boxes in the world for our products? Sheetmetal sounds wrong for that, perhaps Cardboard-CAD, or Bendy-CAD? B)

On the plus side I bet once this is released there will be some Onshape coders who'd like to work on something, perhaps anything, that isn't sheet metal for a while... :)

as ever with Onshape you've taken what is available in traditional CAD and taken it to the next level.  The sheet metal functions look sharper, more powerful and quicker than Solidworks.  Looking forward to using them

Is sheet metal going to be included in the Professional subscription or a separate additional cost add-on?

    It looks great BTW!

It is great, in the in-context design, another important sheet metal module is looking forward to.

@NeilCooke - that could be really handy for making small box patterns on a laser cutter.

  • owen_sparksowen_sparks Member, Developers Posts: 2,660 PRO
Wow, after just a couple of minutes of playing with it I'm liking it a lot.  Love the separate view cube for the flat view.  Something similar might be nice in standard PS's to see multiple angles of the same part without having to keep spinning around.

Once again Onshape you're making it all look easy, my sincere congratulations on some exceptional work.  Beer-o'clock for all involved I'd say.

Sheetmetal -Holy cow, my dreams have been answered..

Maybe I'm just missing it, but is there a way to insert the flat pattern into a drawing?

thanks for all the hard work OnShape team!!   Take a month off!

Just started trying out the sheet metal and I ran into one problem. On our sheet metal parts we tend to put a chamfer or a radius on all sharp corners but when I try this on a sheet metal part I get the following error.

"Active sheet metal modules are not allowed."

I can "Finnish" the sheet metal part and add these features but they need to show up in the flat pattern.

    Am I missing something?

    Thanks!

@christopher_quijano,  Fillets/chamfers are not currently possible in sheet metal, before 'finishing', but are certainly on our list of things to add in upcoming releases.

@paul_chastell Thanks for getting back to me. I am still happy with what we got so far.  :)

@christopher_quijano although not as convenient as chamfer and fillet features, one workaround for now: You can create sketches and extrude-remove material. This works while still editing a sheet metal model and will show up in your flat pattern.
