    Very nice update

Love all the new thread improvments

  • eric_pestyeric_pesty Member Posts: 2,104 PRO

My guess is that the cosmetic thread might only show on thread created with the updated version of the features (i.e. try creating a new tapped hole or external thread feature in your doc and see if it shows up on there…)

Wow—-this is quite some update. Really useful functionality here…I love it all especially Constrained Surface and Routing Curve.

    Thank you

@S1mon There is not a keyboard shortcut just yet, but stay tuned…

I tried applying the cosmetic thread to some custom bolt models and couldn't help but notice that it seemed a little off. Decided to count the threads and it seems like the cosmetic thread is not really accurate? (Is it supposed to be?)

This is a 1/4" long #10-32 bolt, which should have 8 threads, but I'm counting at least 22.

Collapse & expand folders in feature tree - finally, I can find those pesky parts (in large assemblies) that need to be updated. This is huge, thank you onshape. And the routing curve will also be very useful. Overall, one of the better all around improvements to date.

Is this by chance an old document? Can you try it on a fresh one? I just created a test part with #10-32 tapped hole and external thread and it does give me the correct cosmetic thread:

Sorry Euan, that may have been my "Southern Hemisphere standard" thread direction…

Actually, that video was created earlier in the week before we had a chance to address something - it is all correct now.

Using Polycam on my Android phone I was able to test out the new constrain feature on my favorite stress ball. As a small test, I just split out the eye portion, selected the mesh surface, and updated the tolerance to 0.4mm. 2 thumbs up!

Using a new document does seem to work, but is there a way to get it to work in an old document?

  • Ste_WilsonSte_Wilson Member Posts: 427 EDU

When you open an older doc it often pops up and says... This doc is old, update now or later..

If you want to force onshape to update a doc send it to trash and restore.

    On a completely different note...

Cosmetic threads don't seem to appear when a part is inserted into another document?

Am I correct in thinking this?

For example, here's a thread on a part being viewed in the document it was created in.

When it's inserted into an assembly in another document, the threads disappear.

Tried inserting it into a brand new document, but that still didn't work.

Wow this release is a real slugger! I'm always happy to have my features made obsolete by better native implementations 😍 Can't wait to play with it all.

@GregBrown you inspired me with the Violin video.

Here's a quick scan using the Creality Ferret scanner for anyone who wants to try out some of the new mesh tools. It's pretty accurate for a budget scanner! A bit annoying to get a proper scan since it kept loosing track of the object.

Double check that you made a version in the source document (after creating the threads) before inserting/updating into the new document!

  • aeromorrisonaeromorrison Member Posts: 49 PRO

Great release! As an aircraft developer I'm really going to love Frames—Lock Profile Faces. This will be a real time-saver. The other features/improvements are excellent as well.

This is a great update, but am I supposed to be able to use the measure tool on a routing curve to find its length? If I can't get the total length of hose/tubes/wires made with routing curve, I won't really be able to use it.

I didn't think cosmetic threads would be that important to me, but I was just reminded that I'm going to need to tap some holes in a part I'm making I might have forgotten about!

  • EvanReeseEvanReese Member, Mentor Posts: 2,309 ✭✭✭✭✭

@jason_1 That makes sense to me. I feel like this ought to be handled by a natively built table, but I know you're code-savvy so you could always make your own custom table for that job. https://cad.onshape.com/FsDoc/library.html#module-table.fs

Can we get the cosmetic threads to generate a matching shader in Render Studio next (also needed for all "standard parts" that have threads)?
It's a bit jarring to have all fasteners show up as smooth "rods" in Render studio (and not exactly trivial to create something realistic looking either)!

  • GregBrownGregBrown Member, Onshape Employees, csevp, pcbaevp Posts: 296

The length of a Routing curve is shown in the feature name e.g. :

The measure tool (lower right corner of the graphics window) measures lengths of edges, so if you have a Routing curve which is an interpolated spline this will automatically show the length of the curve (since it is made of one edge). You can create a variable from that in the same dialog. If the Routing curve is a polyline then it is (naturally) made of more than 1 edge. So the measure tool will need you to select the edges instead of just the curve. This is possible with Create selection-tangent connected edges etc.

The rendered cosmetic threads are a nice addition but unfortunately the specs of Standard, Size, and Pitch are not configurable. Therefore, the ThreadLab FS is still a winner for configured custom hardware. Improvement request incoming. 😅

    Another great release

    Awesome update!!!!

I really enjoy an organized Feature Tree. The instance folders and nested folders are great added functionality😁.

  • S1monS1mon Member Posts: 3,256 PRO

I imagined that @GregBrown would make a video about routing curves with this release, and now it's out:

  • HeRoHeRo Member Posts: 4 PRO

Thank you for adding thread dimensions in drawings. Now it would be really helpful If I didn't have to do a section cut first but could add a dimension directly, like so:

    or better yet:

Also, as @AngleC mentioned, it would be really nice if cosmetic threads could be parameterized with variables so that for configured parts it can be added in the right size automatically

Well yer, that one looks right handed to me too. How did the one in the image I posted look to you?
