Imported an STL part but cannot design on it

Hi all,
I have imported an STL file and would like to design on top of the existing part. However, I cannot create a sketch or plane. Is there a way to start designing with imported STL parts?

Try constrained surface to enclose all as a solid.
Would have tried on your document but it was view only. If you intended other then it wants to be made public for copying.

Sounds like you already got your answer, but wanted to chime in to say that if your goal is modifying this part, it looks simple enough to recreate using the mesh as a reference. That would give you a lot of flexibility. If you just want to add to it or cut a little bit away, then carry on with a mixed modeling approach.
