Trouble Selecting a Merge Scope

I imported a file into onshape to try to make a hole in it. Should be a simple process, but I have run into an error.
To make the hole in the file, I made a sketch of a circle, and a line to serve as my axis. Then I tried to use a revolve feature (solid - remove). However, when I select merge with all, I get an error message telling me that no merge scope is selected. I then tried to select a merge scope, but it is not letting me select any of the surfaces.
The object originally imported as a composite shape, then when I ran into this issue, I used the delete part feature to split it into surfaces. The problem now is that it still will not allow me to select any of the surfaces (or the merge with all button) as my merge scope.
Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated.

you cannot remove material from a surface, since there's no material.
either close the surfaces to a solid and model from there as you're trying, or else use the 'split' feature to trim the surface.
This cannot be done within the feature and will have to be done afterwards.
Thank you so much for your response. How do I close the surfaces to a solid?
Hard to say without seeing the geometry. can you share your doc?
all edges of the surfaces have to meet and enclose a space and then a unite will make a solid of them.
Turn on 'highlight boundary edges' under the camera and render options (little cube at the top right) to see where any gaps may still be.
