How do I mate a hirth joint?

I haven't been able to mate a hirth joint correctly no matter what I choose to mate (point, plane or line). The one half has a rod that fits into a spindle and that mates fine which I mate first. Then I try to mate the hirth joint and it doesn't work. Search for hirth mate test on Public.

Mates in Onshape are a bit different than in other traditional CAD systems, see this video

Welcome to Onshape!

Onshape mating is a little different. In general, if you find yourself trying to add a SECOND mate to any two parts, 9 times out of 10 you dont need it!

Just edit one of the mate connectors so it is rotated until teeth are aligned. Then all you need to use is a fasten mate. You can also add mate conectors in part studios utilising sketches which can also be helpful

Yes, what @brucebartlett said, explicit mate connectors declared in your partstudio are really helpful in cases like this.
